The color(s) of soil

Writer's Digest: pick a color and write a poem inspired by it.

umber

the color of under,
a fundament, somber
or thunder

deep within roll
ants and ant-cows,
annelids, rhizomes,
whole worlds of microbes
each with its color, its tone

I hear them all as
a pondering, a wonder:
I pause for
ummm
